Phthalates were found in almost all foods tested, often in high concentrations. The levels of bisphenols were lower than in previous tests, indicating that some progress has been made in limiting their levels. But bisphenols are still present in many products.
Products such as Del Monte peaches, Chicken of the Sea pink salmon, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s burgers and Fairlife milkshakes had particularly high levels of phthalates. Some safer alternatives include Hut’s Original Cheese Pan Pizza and Chef Boyardee Big Bowl Beefaroni. It contained less phthalates than similar products from other brands.
Bisphenols and phthalates can disrupt hormone production and potentially lead to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, some types of cancer, and many other diseases. Even trace amounts of these chemicals can be dangerous, especially with long-term exposure.
While the ubiquity of these chemicals in foods is concerning, we can all take steps to reduce exposure and protect our health, researchers say. By advocating for change and making informed choices, we can achieve a safer food system for everyone.
