The company says the App Store is not a single platform, but instead consists of five different app stores, each dedicated to a specific operating system and Apple device, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch.
The announcement came during a hearing at the European Court of Justice, where Apple is challenging the application of a new EU law known as the Digital Market Act (DMA) to it.
The DMA requires major tech platforms, including Apple, to allow competition in the app stores on their devices. The company argues that each of its App Stores is a separate platform and therefore should not be subject to these rules.
Apple also stated that iMessage is not subject to the DMA because it is not a paid service and does not generate revenue through the sale of hardware or the processing of personal data.
