Burnout is a syndrome that results from chronic stress at work, says Quentin Durand-Moreau, an assistant professor of occupational medicine at the University of Alberta. It has three signs: a feeling of burnout, a strong detachment from work (detachment from the environment), and a reduced importance of personal achievements in the workplace. However, most cases of burnout meet the diagnostic criteria for depression.

The second thing you need to know is the causes of burnout. The main reason for this is excessive working hours. Research by the World Health Organization and the International Labor Organization shows that working more than 55 hours a week increases the risk of death from heart attack by 17% and the risk of death from stroke by 35%. Long working hours may also contribute to increased alcohol consumption.

Burnout is not normal and can be serious. This is the third thing to understand. For example, a person may experience family problems due to burnout.

In a good organization, preventing burnout is the responsibility of the company, not the employees.

Covid is exacerbating the burnout problem. This is especially true for long Covid. People with this disease experience symptoms such as confusion, difficulty focusing on tasks, fatigue, chronic pain, muscle pain and shortness of breath. This does not give them the opportunity to work on the computer for hours.

However, various studies on working from home reveal contradictory results. Some say it has a good effect on people, while others say it has a bad effect. However, age seems to be an important factor here. Older workers don’t seem to cope better with working from home than younger workers. Additionally, some people in management positions may find it more difficult to work from home. Stress can also cause confusion between work and private (home) life.

The key to preventing burnout is to establish and follow certain rules. These rules should be aimed at preventing psychosocial risks in workplaces worldwide.
