For the first time in history, Apple overtook Samsung to take first place in the world in smartphone shipments for the year, according to data from analytics company IDC.

In 2023, Apple shipped 234.6 million iPhones, which is 3.7% more than in 2022. Samsung shipments during the same period amounted to 226.6 million smartphones. Xiaomi closes the top three with 145.9 million smartphones.

Apple managed to take first place in increasing the volume of smartphone shipments.

In total, 1.16 billion smartphones were shipped in 2023, which is 3.2% less than the year before. But analysts believe that device shipments in 2024 will exceed past levels.

Apple’s continued and sustained success is largely due to the growing trend toward more premium devices, which now make up more than 20% of the market, hampering aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans.

IDC also notes that this is the first time since 2010 that Samsung is not ranked number one in smartphone shipments. At the end of 2010, Nokia was in first place, and Apple was not even in the top five. [The Verge]
