Apple is secretly buying up AI startups and hiring in the field to bring new AI to the iPhone 16.
Since the beginning of 2017, the company has acquired 21 startups. The last acquisition was in early 2023. Apple then bought WaveOne, a service that develops video compression requirements based on artificial intelligence.
They are preparing to lead mergers and consolidations. I’ll be shocked if they don’t make a major change in AI this year because there’s an AI arms race going on and Apple isn’t going to be left out.

Additionally, nearly half of Apple’s new AI job openings now include the term “deep learning,” which refers to algorithms powered by generative AI such as ChatGPT.
Apple wants to add support for generative AI at the hardware level so that the iPhone can create texts using its hardware, rather than the company’s server. This challenge requires reducing the size of large language models based on generative AI, as well as higher-performance processors. [Financial Times]
