This research, led by Corina Amor Vegas of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), suggests that CAR T cells, a type of immunotherapy that has shown promise in treating cancer, may be the key to unlocking the “fountain of youth.”

CAR T cells have been modified to recognize and attack specific molecules on the surface of cells. In this study, scientists engineered CAR T cells to recognize and kill senescent cells, which are characterized by a permanent pause in cell division.

After injecting CAR T cells into mice, the researchers noted significant improvements in their overall health. The mice had reduced body weight, improved metabolism, improved muscle function, and slowed the progression of age-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

The most remarkable aspect of this therapy is its long-term effect. A single dose of CAR T cells at a young age was sufficient to provide lifelong protection against age-related diseases.

“This is a groundbreaking development because it shows that we can potentially prevent or delay the onset of age-related diseases in humans,” says Amor Vegas.
