Liquid lithium has many advantages over solid lithium coatings. It better withstands the extreme heat of plasma, which can reach 2 million degrees Celsius. It also reduces heat loss by absorbing hydrogen ions escaping from the plasma. Additionally, small amounts of lithium evaporating from the liquid walls of the reactor and entering the plasma can improve charge exchange dynamics, allowing the plasma to retain the hydrogen ions added by the neutral beam without displacing other hydrogen ions.

Researchers are now trying to develop methods to increase the use of liquid lithium in larger tokamaks. They believe liquid lithium could be a key component in next-generation fusion reactors that would provide a clean and sustainable energy source.
