Apple made big changes to iOS this week, allowing third-party apps, browser motion and NFC to be used on iPhone in Europe.

But the new rules have one important nuance: they only apply to iPhones. For iPad users, virtually nothing changes.

Of all the innovations, only games streaming applications will be available on the iPad. Other iPadOS app developers may charge reduced fees in Europe. All other important changes are available only on iOS.

This is due to the fact that the European Union considers iOS a platform monopoly only on the iPhone. iPadOS is a completely different operating system in the eyes of Apple and Europe, despite its outdated codebase.

However, the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forced Apple to make these changes, does not separate the App Store on Apple platforms. According to the European Commission, the App Store is a one-stop shop for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV.

Apple thinks differently. The company says it operates five different app stores for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV. [9to5Mac]
