Groups and users on social networks freely trade fake versions of Digital CNH. Fake versions of the identity document are sold for prices starting from R$ 50.

With a quick search, you can find groups like “Fake ID and Editables” on Facebook. In the virtual environment, people offer services to create not only driver’s licenses but also many other documents.

In one post, a user sells old and new ID cards, proof of income, proof of address, voter registration cards, health certificates, utility bills, and even fake school records.

In the case of the fake Digital CNH, advertisers promise that it can be used to work on accommodation, tickets, clubs, chip removal, entry to shows and transportation applications.

How do scammers fake a Digital Driver’s License?

Digital CNH was launched in the country in early 2018. Since then, drivers who already have the document on paper can also access a version via the app.

According to the government, Digital CNH is “a secure way to always have your documents at hand, with the same validity as printed documents. Another advantage is being able to share the digital document of the vehicle with other people who use it.”

And if the digital driver’s license is obtained from an official application, how can fraudsters manage to fake it? A case discovered by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) raised awareness of the crime.

On January 4 of this year, a driver was detained in Barra do Ribeiro in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region after nearly causing an accident with his PRF car. The 43-year-old man showed a digital version of his driver’s license when approached.

Everything seemed perfect in practice until the police carried out a check and confirmed that the man’s original driver’s license had been suspended for 18 years.

In the video recorded by the police teams, it is seen that the fake application imitates the real thing and shows all the person’s information as if it were real software. Scammers even offer a PDF version of the driver’s license in the “package”.

Risks and penalties for those using fake Digital Driving Licenses

The Criminal Code provides severe penalties for both those who issue false documents and those who purchase false documents. Forgery of private documents is a crime punishable by imprisonment from two to six years and a fine.

Additionally, anyone who uses non-original versions of any digital application faces various risks. Due to not knowing the origin of the application, the software may rely on malicious intermediaries such as malware.

The company stressed in a note that Facebook’s Community Standards “do not allow our services to be used to promote criminal activity, and we are always improving our technology to combat suspicious activity.”

The rest of the company’s statement reads, “We also encourage people to report any content they believe violates Facebook’s Community Standards and Meta’s Advertising Standards through the app itself.”
