This achievement, published as a joint effort between the Center for Integrated Technologies and Organic Synthesis (CiTOS) and the Center for Research and Development of Macromolecules (CERM), has the potential to revolutionize sustainable production and pave the way for cleaner, safer batteries.

Researchers use CO2 and glycerin to produce glycerol carbonate, a valuable alternative to petroleum-based additives, in less than 30 seconds. This method outperforms existing approaches, allowing for faster and cheaper production. Glycerol carbonate has many uses, including safer battery electrolytes, biolubricants, and environmentally friendly solvents.

This work lays the foundation for the continuous industrial production of glycerol carbonate. More research is currently being done to scale up the process and find more applications.
