The robot’s main module includes a battery module, a mapping module with a high-resolution optical sensor and a laser to create a 3D image of the inner surface of the pipe, and a repair module.

Currently the second module is a rotating element that applies a continuous layer of fast-setting sealing resin to the surface of the pipe. The team on the surface detects problems using a mapping module and artificial intelligence system to analyze images.

The robot can inspect approximately 14.5 km of a 305 mm diameter pipe in eight hours, or seal approximately 3 km of pipe at a time. The robot gets its power from a 61-meter cable, but scientists plan to increase this figure to 2 kilometers.
