Scientists predict that more than 50 percent of people who have had a stroke will have memory and thinking problems in the next year, and a third of them will be diagnosed with dementia within five years.
A study of nearly 180,000 stroke survivors found that the risk of dementia was 80% higher after a stroke.
It turned out that the risk of developing dementia was highest in those who had a stroke in the first year. During this period, the chance of encountering senile dementia almost triples. But over time, this risk gradually decreases: after five years, the probability of a person being diagnosed with dementia increases by only 1.5 times.
