Taylor Swift’s lawyer has sent a letter to the student asking him to stop showing how much the singer pollutes the environment by flying on a private jet.
Cease and Desist Letter, posted December 22 and which has so far been made public, is aimed at Jack Sweeney, an information technology student at the University of Central Florida, who posts public flight data on the private jets of several celebrities on social media.
In December 2022, Sweeney was subject to legal threats from Elon Musk, who noted that the student was posting “coordinates to his murder.” After the threats, Sweeney was banned from participating in X.
Sweeney publishes FAA data to the public, so he’s simply making the information more accessible, available to anyone willing to look for it. However, Sweeney usually accompanies the data with a calculation of the amount of pollutants emitted by each flight.
On average, a private jet typically emits 10 pounds of carbon dioxide per mile flown. And while private jet flights account for only 0.04% of total emissions, they are produced by a tiny number of people, so they are a source of controversy because they reflect vast inequalities in polluting patterns.
Despite her approach, Swift’s lawyer argues that by publishing public data about the singer’s flights on social networks, she is contributing to harassment networks. The AP agency questioned to the law firm hired by Swift about whether it has evidence that the singer’s pursuers are meeting at airports where the singer’s plane lands. The company did not respond.
“I think it’s important to note that I’m not trying to hurt her, in fact I think Swift has good songs. However, I believe in transparency and public information,” Sweeney said in an email to the outlet. Edge.
