Doctor Vijay Nambi emphasized that high blood pressure usually cannot be felt until it is too late. Therefore, it is important to undergo regular examinations.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, can silently damage your arteries and heart for years. All of these can lead to heart attack, stroke or heart failure. It also increases the chance of aneurysm. Because high blood pressure affects arteries throughout the body, a person may experience problems with their eyesight or kidneys.

Nambi said the normal range for blood pressure readings is 120 to 80 and below. Systolic pressure is considered high when it reaches 120. If a person’s blood pressure is between 130 and 80, they are considered to have stage 1 hypertension. In stage 2 hypertension, the range is 140 or higher (systolic pressure) and 90 or higher (diastolic pressure). If readings are above 180 to 120, the person needs urgent medical attention.
