This week, the sports musical melodrama “Ice 3” was released in Russia.
The continued development of the Russian film franchise is an interweaving of various genres and storylines, including drama, comedy, romance, music videos, as well as historical personal productions and sports sagas of figure skating and hockey.
We were surprised by the large number of reviews about the news on Kinopoisk (today the film’s rating is 8.2 points). We decided to go to the cinema to understand the unexpectedly successful film.
The film is really good, but there are many “buts” that the software creators voice after watching it. First things first.
The movie is good, but the focus of the story is blurred
What is the movie about: “Ice 3” is a continuation of the story of the heroes of the world of figure skating and hockey. At the end of the plot, the audience is shown the growing up story of Nadya, the main characters of the first two parts. The heroine’s goal is to win the prestigious Ice Cup competition; in the process of preparing for the competition, she faces many restrictions, including injuries and conflicts in her personal life.
The Ice franchise began as a warm and inspiring story of transition, love and passion for figure skating. The first part took its dramatic depth by telling a love story that helps the main character overcome difficulties. The comedic moments, while entertaining, served more to relieve the tension, making the film easier to follow.
The second part delved deeper into the drama, presenting viewers with even more complex life situations and moral dilemmas. The comedy component faded into the background, taking over the main themes of loss, family values and self-sacrifice.
The third part of the story turned out to be controversial. The main problem is that the film emotional intensity of the first partsbut very often they overcome the boundaries of production, the drama is overloaded, the actions of the heroes are difficult to explain with motives, and the comedy is absurd.
Undoubtedly, the film skillfully preserves the unique spirit of the previous parts. The creators very sensitively felt the expectations of the Russian economy. The movie skillfully combines our country’s love of figure skating, national pride in hockey and melodrama, making it attractive for expansion.
As a result, at some point you simply realize that you are watching a project that is designed to attract the most diverse crowd in cinemas. Whether this is good or bad, decide for yourself.
Here everyone finds something interesting for themselves. The movie tries to combine several genres at once, but this diversity here is both an independent participant in the film and its weakness.
The film seems easy, but the sudden mood swings confuse
First of all, the film is a sports melodrama about development. But dramatic moments, bright inner characters and difficult life situations are often replaced by frivolous comedy scenes. These transitions gradually occur too abruptly and do not pay attention to the accompanying characters.
Only that the audience was experiencing a breakdown in the relationship between lovers, but now they are laughing at a funny brawl in the hockey arena. And literally a couple of minutes passed between scenes! There is a dissonance in the perception of what happened.
The comedic elements here are constantly intrusive and inappropriate, too often following chains of drama and dramatic episodes.
It’s a musical, but not everyone likes the songs.
Integrated music videos suddenly interrupt the building’s dramatic tension, creating a feeling of abruptness in the plot.
It seems that the songs are familiar and good from childhood, and the performance is interesting and not entirely disgusting, and the visuals are cool, but they rather kill the drama, making the story more frivolous. Ultimately, this leads to inconsistency, incorrectness in the narrative and the perception of the story arc.
It may seem that the song lyrics often reflect the themes and motifs of the film, such as love, loss, dreams, overcoming and self-discovery. But are the tunes really well chosen? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In the end, this ruins the overall musical experience. It was worth leaving only those musical numbers that definitely resonate with EVERYONE and perceive the same emotions.
But there are completely different genres of music mixed here, and some of them can leave a double impression. The same Dolphin song “Love”, performed in one of the most dramatic moments, can be perceived completely differently for everyone sitting in the hall. However, the creators of this episode screwed it up because of the undeniably cool but challenging song they chose.
A film about a father and daughter, but dad has questions
In the third installment of the franchise, the sports drama Ice takes center stage, and the animosity between father and daughter through the lens of sports should add layers to the characters, showcasing different sides of their oh-so-complicated personalities. But objectively it turned out bad.
Most of their moments become mental and unnatural. Instead of sincere communication, the ability to reveal the characters’ characters and their inner world, the audience supports leadership and clichéd dialogues that clearly do not affect the relationship between father and daughter.
The character played by Alexander Petrov behaves naively or even stupidly. For three films, Gorin, it seems, had to go from an eccentric guy to a hockey team coach and a wise father. But in fact, he is still such a dumb hockey player that he is perceived as a competent and caring parent.
On the one hand, Petrov’s character comes into deep concern for the child, on the other hand, sometimes it seems to him so cartoonish, raising questions about the fine line between drama and comedy. There is no need to talk about a truly serious family drama between father and daughter.
And the daughter behaves too frivolously. A film about love, but you don’t believe in it
The love line occupies the greatest place here; it motivates the main characters who commit the main actions that determine their future fate. But here it is the most standard CLICHE about lovewhich we have collected hundreds of times.
At the same time, you simply don’t believe in the chemistry of the main characters. Just as you don’t believe in the unexpected rebirth of an arrogant, boorish young hockey player into a romance and a motivator for a young figure skater.
Movies often portray love with a first person as a romantic ideal, but in Ice 3, the look at the rapid development of the relationship between the characters seems too accelerated and superficial. Personally, I just didn’t get the feeling of an emotional connection. I just don’t believe it, that’s all! Stereotypical, cliched, implausible.
Typically, a compelling love story involves obstacles that challenge the characters to make their relationship stronger. But here conflicts between kings are resolved SO QUICKLY that no transactions in relationships are simply profitable for them.
The film is about sports, but realism is not included here
In the new film, the storyline where the figure skater is confident without a coach is worth highlighting as one of the most controversial moments.
Figure skating is one of those sports that simply requires careful technical guidance. The live(!) presence of a coach becomes a necessary condition for the success of an athlete. Of course, he acts not only as a technical mentor, but also as a psychologist, strategist and support. But in this case, the writers decided to think only about psychology. And for viewers who value realism and clearly implement the main aspects in cinema, this turn of events may seem crazy.
Moreover, the training shown, which is carried out by the young hockey player, does not have even minimal knowledge about figure skating, and also pushes the story into the genre of “sports fiction”.
But it’s worth a look, you’re unlikely to leave dissatisfied
On the one hand, the film had many minor (and not so minor) flaws. But I must say that the movie looks very easy and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. Maybe thanks to the song “Wind of Change” from the famous movie “Mary Poppins, Goodbye” in the final credits, or maybe due to the lightness and absence of cruel drama. The latter is now sorely lacking in real life.
In the end, the film offers viewers great sports scenes and an emotional and inspiring journey through the world of sports. Albeit with a dose of fairy tale.
Just a good good movie.
