Google is experimenting with native Gemini chatbot integration in Chrome. Available in the Canary edition, an experimental version of the browser, the tool lets you quickly chat with the company’s artificial intelligence (AI).
This feature is very similar to the Copilot integration in Microsoft Edge: with it, The user can quickly chat with the AI from the address bar Omnibox.
But unlike Microsoft’s solution, integration with Chrome is a less comprehensive shortcut. When typing a prompt, the user is redirected to the chatbot’s official page in a new tab. In the company’s solution, the assistant opens in the side window without interrupting the existing navigation.
How do I enable Gemini in Google Chrome?
Since this is a function still under development, it is not enabled by default. To activate it the user must find it in the menu chrome://flags.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Open Google Chrome Canary and make sure it is on the latest version;
- Type “chrome://flags/#omnibox-starter-pack-expansion” in the address bar;
- Change the function status to “Enabled” and restart the browser.
If everything was done correctly, the Gemini shortcut should now be available in your Omnibox.
To interact with her, the user must type “@” in the address bar and select the “Chat with Gemini” option. After that, simply enter the prompt you want (Brazilian Portuguese supported).
If you are not signed in to your Google account, the browser will redirect you to the sign in screen. You must log in to interact with the chatbot.
Function under development
Gemini integration in Google Chrome is a feature in development, so No predictions for exact release. It is worth noting that the function is available in Chrome Canary in version 123.
