With the release of Android 15, the curtain is closing on the Snapdragon-powered Pixel. In 2020-2021, the Pixel 4a, 5a, 5 and 4a 5G models were reliable companions, but they also looked like prototypes of something more.

In 2021, Google introduced the Pixel 6 series, marking the debut of the Tensor chip. This wasn’t just a new processor; It was a redesign of the Pixel that gave Google more control and optimization for certain tasks.

The tensor was not perfect. Despite its good performance and battery life, it was plagued by heating problems, modem problems and software problems. However, it did power the well-received Pixel 6a, further establishing Tensor in the mid-range segment.

Tensor G2 on Pixel 7/7 Pro brought minor improvements, while G3 on Pixel 8/8 Pro showed a significant increase in power, efficiency and modem performance.

According to the publication, while the G4 is a minor upgrade, the G5 promises to be a game changer. Manufactured by TSMC and likely developed entirely by Google, this product marks a bold step towards independence.

Was it worth it? Giving up on Snapdragon was a gamble. Google was aiming for an “AI breakthrough” and may have been successful. However, some object to it being exclusive to Pro models.

Google’s bold move paves the way for a future where Pixel hardware and software will be deeply integrated, opening up potentially exciting possibilities.
