Scientists recently discovered that bacteria in the gut can improve a person’s mood. Certain strains of Lactobacillus in particular work this way.

The problem is that a person’s mood only improves with the right combination of bacteria in the right conditions. For example, a probiotic may reduce the stress of a person experiencing exam stress, but may not help post-traumatic stress disorder.

Experiments on mice showed how the composition of bacteria in the intestines affects the animals’ mood. After analyzing the feces of stressed rodents and normal mice, scientists noticed that the number of Lactobacillus bacteria was significantly reduced in the stressed ones. Moreover, there are over 170 different species and even more strains of Lactobacillus.

It is now known that mice carrying the bacterial strains Lactobacillus intestinalis ASF360 and Lactobacillus murinus ASF361 are more resistant to stress and experience less fear.
