Patent troll VirnetX began its multi-year contract with Apple back in late 2010 due to violations of a number of patents.
After 9 years of litigation, Apple agreed to pay a $454 million bonus in 2020. However, some other technology “breaks” include FaceTime, VPN, and iMessage. They have also been going on since 2010.
A jury in Texas decided that Apple was guilty of patent infringement, and the court ordered the company to pay $502.8 million. However, the Cupertino team immediately appealed this decision. In March 2023, a US appeals court found that VirnetX’s second set of patent claims were invalid, but VirnetX appealed the verdict.
Today, the US Supreme Court accepted the case, and Biden administration officials supported it. With this, the 13-year-long proceedings are now finally over. [9to5]
