Google is confident that the Justice Department is suing the company for its success because it wants to give rivals “more incentives and opportunities to improve search quality, despite long periods of unsuccessful attempts to achieve such success.” The ministry believes that the company spent a huge amount of money to suppress competitors and did not invest in the development of its search engine and search advertising.
Google, in turn, believes a conviction would violate U.S. antitrust laws. “Punishing a successful company that outperforms its competitors in innovating for the benefit of consumers harms competition, not the other way around,” the documents state.
