In 2023, the volume of venture investments in Russia reached a record low in the last seven years: $118 million, a figure that represents a more than ten-fold drop compared to 2022, according to research data from the Innovation Agency from Moscow.

At the same time, last year the number of transactions increased slightly: from 165 to 181. Without taking into account large transactions in 2022 ($840 million), the reduction in 2023 was 3.5 times.
The volume of foreign investment in Russia decreased 15 times to 55 million dollars, two years before it was 814 million dollars and in 2021 it was 1,636 million dollars, but foreign investments represented almost half of all investments in the market Russian. In 2023, more than 80% came from investors from Hong Kong, China, Kazakhstan and Belarus.
For the first time, pre-seed and seed investments accounted for more than 60% of both the number and volume of transactions. Early stage investments indicate investor interest in business models that are not yet well represented in the market.
The volume of initial investments in 2023 increased by 2.5 times compared to 2022 due to new knowledge-intensive companies. At the same time, later-stage investments have decreased significantly: only five deals were closed in the B and C+ rounds last year.
The share of companies operating in foreign markets at the time of attracting investments has halved: from 35% in 2021 to 14% in 2023. Over the past year, eight new funds have appeared with a total volume of more than 200 billion dollars, most of which is private and focused on IT.
Previously, research firm PitchBook released statistics on venture capital investments for 2023. According to the company, it was the worst year for Silicon Valley startups since 2019 and the worst year for the world as a whole since 2017.
