Starting March 16, all cars with Russian license plates will have to leave Finland, the European country’s Customs Control Department said.

The words of the head of the department are quoted by local television channels, for example MTV Uutiset and Yle. Finland introduced a ban on Russian cars entering the country in September 2023. An exception was later made for EU citizens whose relatives live in Russia.
One of the difficulties for car owners will be that they will have to travel to neighboring countries and not directly to the Russian Federation, due to the closure of checkpoints on the eastern border. The imposed ban, as the authorities recalled, applies to all cars with Russian license plates, even if they come from European countries.
Specific sanctions for those who remain have not yet been announced. The authorities are working on the issue. It is known that the decision will be based on an analysis of “why the car is here, how long it lasted and whether certain formalities regarding the car were met.”
Currently, Customs does not have data on the number of cars registered in the Russian Federation in Finland. Presumably we are talking about thousands of cars.
