PS6 will arrive in a few years, although that doesn’t mean its features will have to wait. Although these advances are usually filtered through insiders or from the production chain the information comes from Sony itself. Mark Cernychief architect of PlayStation, proposed first details about the GPU which will be integrated into your next console.
In a conversation with Jack Huynh, Manager of AMD’s Compute and Graphics Division, Mark Cerny discussed the technical advancements we’ll see in the next generation of consoles. While Cerny isn’t referring specifically to the PS6, it stands to reason that these technologies will debut on Sony’s console. The two companies have signed a collaboration agreement that will result in exclusive improvements for PS6.
Spotlight on the Next Generation Using AI to improve graphics. It’s no secret that NVIDIA’s DLSS has become a must-have for PC gamers; However, console users have taken a backseat. This will change in PS6 and future AMD graphics cards as both work to take advantage of machine learning.
PS6 GPU will rely heavily on artificial intelligence
Three key innovations we’ll see in PS6:
- Neural Arrays. This new approach ensures that GPU compute units work together efficiently, enabling larger machine learning models. This reduces overhead and makes rendering more scalable and powerful, improving the graphical quality of games.
- Radiance Cores. These special hardware blocks are designed for ray tracing and path tracing in real time. They operate similarly to NVIDIA RT cores and improve rendering efficiency while freeing up resources for other areas such as shading and lighting.
- Universal compression. This next-generation system is designed to evaluate and compress all data entering GPU memory, not just textures, freeing up bandwidth to run games at peak performance. According to AMD, universal compression will provide more visual detail, higher frames per second and greater efficiency.
When will PS6 come out?
Before we get too excited, there are a few things we need to consider. AMD and Sony have cautioned that these technologies are at an early stage of development and have only been tested at the simulation level. The most recent rumors mention that the PS6 could arrive between 2027 and 2028, giving Project Amethyst plenty of time to continue innovating.
One of the first fruits AMD and Sony collaboration – PS5 Pro. The console debuted in late 2024 and promised superior performance, although games like Metal Gear Solid Delta or new Silent Hill f. The good news is that the PS5 Pro will soon get FSR 4, the smart scaling technology we see in AMD cards like the Radeon RX 7000.
