What causes nocturia (a condition in which a person wakes up to go to the toilet) and how can it affect our health?

Nocturia can be caused by various diseases. For example, kidney or heart problems, poorly controlled diabetes, bladder infections, overactive bladder or gastrointestinal problems. You may also run to the bathroom at night if you are pregnant, taking certain medications, or using alcohol or caffeine before bed.

Nocturia causes sleep disturbance, but the opposite is also true. Common causes of insomnia are thought to include anxiety, stress and watching television late at night.

It is recommended that adults sleep 7-9 hours a day. The more often you get up to go to the toilet during this period, the more the quality of your sleep is affected. Due to insufficient sleep, you may experience increased fatigue, poor concentration, forgetfulness, mood changes and decreased performance during the day.

In more severe cases, nocturia has been compared to having the same impact on quality of life as diabetes, high blood pressure, chest pain and some types of arthritis. This disease also increases the risk of falling when moving in the dark.
