In a surprising reversal of roles, Donald Trump expressed support for TikTok ahead of the battle being waged in the United States Congress. The controversial former president, who four years ago banned the Chinese bid because he considered it a “threat to national security,” has changed his mind. Trump says Facebook will benefit by getting rid of TikTok and he doesn’t agree.

According to a report from AxiosDonald Trump reacted to the initiative that would lead to the sale of TikTok in the United States. House committee votes to advance law requiring ByteDance to abandon its app within a period of no more than 165 days. Given Joe Biden’s support for the measure, Trump took the moment to voice his opposition.

“If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook and Zuckerschmuck will double your business,” he noted in a post on his Truth Social profile. “I don’t want Facebook, which cheated in the last election, to do better. They are the real enemies of the people!”

The former president’s statements are curious (if not absurd) because during the last year of his mandate he insisted on a veto. Donald Trump himself threatened to block TikTok in the United States, accusing it of espionage and collecting data for the benefit of the Chinese government. Trump demanded that ByteDance sell its operations or he would ban the use of its app in the country.

Faced with threats and blockades, TikTok filed a lawsuit against the government of Donald Trump. ByteDance said that banning the app deprived the community of rights without any evidence. A federal judge later issued an order preventing the app from being removed from the App Store and Google Play.

Donald Trump: from executioner to TikTok defender

the fight took a new turn after the US elections. Donald Trump’s administration abandoned TikTok to focus on a strategy promoting election fraud. Months later, the Capitol incident occurred and the former president’s social media presence evaporated.

Although Joe Biden reversed the decision and promised that he would not block TikTok or WeChat, the truth is that the US President did not back down in the conflict with China. The Asian giant has received additional sanctions and blockades to prevent the sale of chips and artificial intelligence technologies. At the same time, US lawmakers continue to argue that TikTok poses a national security threat.

The veto threat returned to the table this Thursday. The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted two bills targeting TikTok and other Chinese apps. One prohibits app stores like the App Store or Google Play from allowing “apps controlled by foreign adversaries,” and the second prohibits the sale of U.S. citizen data to those governments.

The bill has the support of Joe Biden, so Donald Trump saw an opportunity to attack his opponent. The most striking thing about the former president’s statements has nothing to do with his changing roles, but direct attack on Facebook. Trump uses the derogatory word “schmuck” to refer to Mark Zuckerberg, which is Yiddish for hateful people.

Will Donald Trump be able to change the anti-China policies that he himself has promoted?
