Analyst Benedict Evans said the Vision Pro is “a device that Meta (banned in Russia and recognized as extremist) wants to achieve in 3-5 years.” But he also made a statement that Meta VR engineers suggested that Vision Pro is “essentially the same thing” as Quest.
In response to this, Mark Zuckerberg said that Quest 3 is better than Vision Pro. It also claims that the Quest is only for gaming. This device can also be used for social media, watching videos and surfing the Internet.
I don’t think the devices are the same. We say the quest is better. If in 3-5 years our devices weigh the same as theirs, or have motion blur like theirs, or lack accurate inputs, etc., then that means we will regress significantly. Yes, their solution is superior, but they paid for it with many other compromises that made their device inferior in many ways. This is not what happened to us.
In fact, 3 of the top 7 apps for Quest are networking-related – Horizon, VR Chat, and Rec Room. A browser and video player are also among the top applications. Fitness is not so developed there, but it also has its own community. So I think the statement that these headsets are only for gaming is outdated. And yes, the higher the resolution the better, but the tradeoff between ergonomics and motion blur isn’t an obvious win when the Quest’s resolution is also pretty good.
