The famous GameBoy, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance emulator Pizza Boy has been removed from the Google Play Store. Developer Davide Berra did not directly attribute this decision to Nintendo, but said that his family was more important to him.
Strato, a promising Switch emulator, has lost one of its main developers. Lynx did not speak publicly about their reasons for leaving but did point to Nintendo’s influence.
Drastic, a long-running NDS emulator, will be removed from the Play Store and its source code will be made open source. The developer says this was in the plans, but Nintendo’s actions have “accelerated the process.”
Other emulators also experience difficulties. A DuckStation (PS1) developer is “tired” of Android, citing Google’s policy requiring developers to reveal their names.
AetherSX2 (PS2) has been removed from the Play Store, but its spin-off NetherSX2 is available for download.
In general, the situation with emulators on Android is unstable. On the one hand, Nintendo is actively fighting piracy. On the other hand, Google’s policies create additional challenges for developers.
