The almost new version of iOS is a pack of fresh emoji. Sometimes the old ones change too.
With iOS 17.4, released last week, Apple updated its gigantic emoji library to comply with Unicode standards – with consequences that have caused controversy both in the West and around the world.
Overall, there is no scandal, the problem is objectively insignificant, and the root cause is so boring that you won’t believe it right off the bat. But this does not change the fact:
In iOS there are no colored emojis or connections with marital status.

This is what one of the family emojis that previously worked in different countries looked like.
You’ve already seen them a hundred times. Many people use them sometimes.
There are a lot of variations in this emoji series, from combinations of the number of children to leather colors.
The emoji themselves remain in iOS 17.4, but their settings have changed.

Yes, now emoji in any modifications are only such families.
How did this happen?
It is very easy to draw conclusions from these changes, blame Apple for something, and so on, depending on one’s beliefs and worldview.
Some people think in this “agenda”, others complain about the “humiliation of the dignity of the family institution”, others do not like the bland appearance of the new emoji – as if these are public toilet icons.
In fact, the situation is as follows.
In December 2022, the Unicode Consortium, taking into account emoji standards, made recommendations to optimize the display of family emoji.
Due to the growing importance of family composition variations year by year, as well as variations of skin colors, Unicode is asking everyone to adopt a simplified format: leaving only silhouettes of people. Then it will be possible to use one emoji to represent a whole range of family components, without offending or depriving anyone.
Apple has adopted these guidelines for running iOS 17.4:
