Mercedes-Benz has signed a commercial agreement with robotics maker Apptronik and has begun testing Apollo humanoid robots to automate “low-skilled and physically demanding manual labor.” For example, to inspect and deliver components to production line workers. Apptronik says Apollo can lift objects weighing up to 25kg.

Neither side disclosed the amount of the deal, designed to reveal the financial benefits of using robotic labor in automotive companies and “understand the potential of robotics.” The number of robots that will participate in the experiment is also unknown, writes the Financial Times.

According to the publication, the androids will be tested at a plant in Hungary, where there has been a labor shortage for several years. The new project will be an opportunity for the automaker to “free up our highly skilled team members” to take on complex tasks rather than those that require little or no skill.

The FT also recalls that in January the car manufacturer BMW announced a similar pilot project, the project of which involves Figure 01 robots. It is also known that Agility Robotics’ Digit bipedal robots are being tested in Amazon warehouses in the United States.
