Unlike existing coding assistants like Github Copilot, Devin goes beyond just suggesting code. It has the capacity to manage entire software development projects from initial planning to bug fixes and final implementation. It is noteworthy that he can even work with projects on freelance platforms such as Upwork.
Users provide Devin with a natural language description of the project through the chatbot interface. Devin then takes charge, developing a step-by-step plan and using his own virtual development environment with tools like a code editor and browser. It writes code, fixes bugs, runs tests, and reports progress in real time, allowing users to track progress.
The available demos show off Devin’s various skills. It deals with routine tasks such as deploying websites and applications, identifying and fixing errors, as well as complex areas such as fine-tuning large language models.
In one example, Devin learned how to create images with hidden messages from a simple blog post. Another example is the successful completion of a project on Upwork that required writing and debugging code for a computer vision model.
Devin is currently in closed beta and is only available to select users. According to Bloomberg’s Ashley Vance, first impressions are positive.
