Scientists from Johns Hopkins University have created a surgical robot called ASTR to remove cancerous tumors from the tongue.

ASTR (autonomous tumor resection system) – autonomous tumor resection system can remove tumors from the tongue with pride on a human level, and some believe that they have even surpassed it.

The operation that has arrived is very complex, so it is not surgeons who undertake them. To remove a tumor, it is necessary to remove all cancer cells while preserving healthy areas of tissue. The situation is complicated by the fact that cancerous tumors can often have visible horizontal borders at the edges, but less obvious vertical borders.

The problem that we hear from many of the surgeons we work with is that it is very difficult to accurately resect the tumor. Surgeons put on a narrow ruler, maintaining a distance of 5 mm, and pay attention to the edges on the sides. But when you need to go deep, it’s so difficult.

Axel Krieger, head of the scientific group

ASTR completely controls the person. The doctor can control the robot and use it to cut the tissue with the top edge in all directions.

Ideally, the robot can remove 5 mm of tissue, which will be enough to remove cadaveric cells. Scientists have tested ASTR in all pig tongues, and it has passed all tests.

In the next phase, ASTR will test internal organs, such as the kidneys, where dissection is required to remove debris. [Hub]
