Here’s how to check your home for bedbugs and, if possible, protect yourself from them.

Remove your luggage. When you get home, place your luggage on a tiled area. For example, to the bathroom. After that, examine things carefully.

Check the furniture. Bed bugs like to hide in upholstery. Also examine the bedding, mattress, headboard, and any fabric-upholstered furniture: there should be no rusty or reddish blood stains, small black specks of bedbug feces, whitish oval eggs the size of apple seeds, bedbugs’ armored exoskeletons, or live insects.

Check the room. Examine fabric seams carefully, look inside dressers, behind curtains or wallpaper, in corners and between pillows.

If you find signs of bedbugs on your clothes, wash them on high heat and clean your trunk using a steam steamer.

Also see your doctor if you experience blisters, skin infection, or allergic reactions that may be associated with bedbug bites.
