Hypersonic missiles, which can reach speeds in excess of Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound), can bypass conventional defenses and, like the invention of the jet engine, potentially change the course of war. While Russia and China already have such weapons in their arsenals, the United States still lags behind.
This likely signals a move into production, as no further testing is planned and no additional funding has been requested by Congress.
Lockheed Martin, the developer of the missile, expressed confidence by saying, “We are ready to provide this fully qualified hypersonic solution to the US Air Force.”
