Sleep deprivation is when a person sleeps less than 6 hours a day. This is an important public health problem in industrialized countries. It affects around 16% of adults in the UK. Insufficient sleep; It is associated with a range of negative health and wellbeing consequences, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease, as well as an increased risk of death.
Meanwhile, a new study reports that people living on greener streets have improved mental health. This was the driving factor for a better night’s sleep.
Scientists analyzed data from more than 16,000 people from 14 European countries, as well as Australia, Canada, the United States and Hong Kong, as part of the BlueHealth International Study (BIS). People were asked about the amount of green space on their streets, whether their homes had views of rivers, lakes and the coast, how much free time they spent in nature, their mental health and how many hours they slept a night.
Those who lived on greener streets or had views of lakes, rivers and coastlines tended to report better mental health. This was associated with a healthier amount of sleep. But people who spent more time relaxing in green and blue areas also reported the same thing.
Overall, the results of the study showed that 17% of people living in green streets sleep less than 6 hours a day. However, the rate of those who do not live on such streets is 22%.
