I never liked the way it works Screen rotation lock function on iPhone.
The problem occurs regularly. You start watching the movie. You need to rotate the browser so that the extension can accommodate more content. You need to turn the other participant’s iPhone during the game so that the charging cable can be reached. And so on.
What does the iPhone owner do in such cases? Closes the curtain, find the display orientation lock button and turn it off. Orientation floats freely.
But what if you need to fix the position of the content?? Stop it from turning around with your friend by keeping everything the way it is?
Right: Nothing. You can turn the screen orientation lock back on, but it won’t help because the content ends up in the standard portrait position.
There is no joy in this switch, especially on the iPhone.
It’s been like this for many, many years. Everyone came to terms with this. But the best is the enemy of the good.
I’ve been using an Android smartphone as my base phone for a few weeks now and will talk about it soon. In the meantime, I want to point out one thing that I liked there. Now I don’t understand why this isn’t available on the iPhone.
Just one button solves ALL display orientation problems
Button.
Here she is – contextual screen rotation button in Android.
This button is usually hidden. To see this, you need to enable screen orientation lock mode on your smartphone. After that, every time you tilt the device in a certain direction, keys appear on the screen for a few seconds.
If you click on it, then The smartphone will ignore the screen orientation lock mode and rotates the display as required by the position of the smartphone. This orientation of the consequences is fixed until you again turn the screen in the other direction and again press this very button (which then appears again).
The presence of a button that appears exactly when it is needed and does not interfere at other times. Don’t worry about auto-rotating the screen ever. There is no need for any “curtain” with it.
The button itself appeared, you pressed it and solved the problem. This is so logical and justified that, excuse the pun, it has already happened to me another question.
The button appeared in Android 9 (pie), which was announced in the spring of 2018. That is, “only” 6 years ago – when the top-end iPhone was the iPhone X, if that. During this time, Apple copied and “modified” many, many ideas for Android.
Why hasn’t this idea been copied yet? What allows iPhone (and iPad, for that matter) owners to quickly change the screen position with the same hook, without having to climb into the curtain every time?
Of course, the question is rhetorical, we all know the answer to it. In any case, we are waiting for something similar in iOS 18. Or in iOS 19. Or later, when Apple finally runs out of minor but well-selling advertising innovations for the firmware. Maybe then they thought about the little things. After all, there are still a lot of emoji that need to be added, there’s a lot of work to do.
PS For those who read the word “orientation” and decided to joke about it in the comments, I have a gift in store! Here it is: 🤡
