To conduct the new study, scientists used 1,550 facial images from 10 different countries. A person’s attractiveness was determined by the average rating of people of the opposite sex who belonged to the same culture as the person participating in the experiment.

It turns out that symmetry is not actually an important factor in beauty. However, what is important is how much facial proportions deviate from the population average. The greater this deviation, the less attractive the face.

Women’s faces that looked more feminine were always perceived as more attractive. At the same time, more masculine faces on men did not make them more attractive. Additionally, women were generally rated as more attractive than men.

Thin people, that is, those with a low body mass index, looked more attractive. The exception was Namibian women, who perceived men with higher body mass index as more handsome.
