Windows 10 will end support on October 14, 2025. Users and healthcare companies pay an annual subscription if they at least receive security updates.
For its own users, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for $61 per year per device. In the second year the subscription will double to $122, and in the third year the subscription will also double to $244.
Extended security updates are not a long-term solution, but rather a temporary measure.

There will be discounts too. For example, if a Windows 10 PC is used to connect to cloud-based Windows 11 PCs through Windows 365, then nothing happens because the security update is included in the Windows 365 subscription.
Educational institutions will pay $1 for ESU in the first year, $2 in the second year and $4 in the third year.
Extended security updates will also be available to regular users via subscription, but Microsoft will announce pricing for them later.
Previously, Microsoft only offered ESU subscriptions to companies that needed to run an older version of Windows. But this time the approach has changed because Windows 10 is very popular. According to StatCounter, Windows 10 is installed on 69% of PCs, while Windows 11 is used on only 27% of computers.
Microsoft’s main goal is to get customers upgrading to Windows 11 faster. But users and businesses are slow to upgrade due to Windows 11’s strict hardware requirements. [The Verge]
