Results of a new study published in the journal Food and Environmental Virology showed how some teas neutralized SARS-CoV-2 in saliva. Moreover, sometimes their effectiveness is 99.9%. This is important because the virus travels through the oropharynx and replicates in the mouth before reaching the lungs.

During their scientific studies, experts examined 24 different types of tea sold in the market. They found that five of these significantly reduced the virus content in saliva: raspberry and ginger, eucalyptus mint, peppermint blend, green tea, and black tea. It turned out that black tea was more effective than others: it reduced the amount of viruses by 99.9%. All tests were performed under simulated conditions in the laboratory.

A team of scientists tested the effectiveness of tea as a rinse and drink in fighting viruses. All five teas were found to reduce the amount of virus by 99.9% within 10 seconds of rinsing. Additionally, five types of tea were found to reduce the amount of virus by at least 96% after just 10 seconds in the mouth as a drink.
