Scientists from the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences plan to create special glasses for windows on the Russian orbital station by 2026. These glasses will have increased durability and uniformity, opening up new possibilities for the operation of optical devices. According to Viktor Sergeev, scientists have managed to increase the strength of glass by applying protective coatings, which will reduce the thickness and weight of the glass and therefore also reduce its economic costs.

Scientists also made calculations on the service life of windows on the ISS at the request of RSC Energia and found that they could last until 2030. They also strengthened the quartz glass with multi-layer protective coatings, making it more resistant to impacts. The first batch of such glass has already been successfully tested and transferred for use in the new spacecraft.
