A fake mobile application called “Sber: Online Bank”, which imitates the Sberbank application, was detected in the App Store. Scammers used the bank’s style and logo to create the illusion of officialdom. However, a representative of the Sberbank call center confirmed that this was a fake application and advised to refrain from installing the application, emphasizing that the real application can only be downloaded from an official source, that is, from a bank branch.
This is not the first case – fake applications from VTB and Tinkoff Bank have previously appeared in the App Store, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warned about this. Experts stated that these fake applications received mostly positive ratings and that the main purpose of their creators was to gain access to users’ personal information. Real banking apps have already been removed from the App Store and Google Play due to US and EU sanctions, but previously downloaded versions remain available to customers.
Sberbank regularly updates its applications in the App Store and informs about it. Recently, a new application called “Online Accounting” appeared, but it was removed from the application store two days later.
