TikTok and other Chinese platforms are getting closer to being banned from operating in the United States. The country’s Senate approved the bill making this a reality on Tuesday (23) by a vote of 79 in favour, 18 against.

According to the project, Chinese developer ByteDance Will have nine to twelve months to sell TikTok To a US company or investors. Otherwise, The app will be considered unregulated and users in the area will be banned from accessboth via browsers and digital stores for Android and iOS.

The vote was clearly carried out thanks to a maneuver by the House of Representatives, the equivalent of Congress in the United States.

To speed up the process, the proposal was “attached” to a package of financial benefits for allied countries in conflictAs in the case of Ukraine and Israel. These are measures considered urgent and easily approved by the Legislative Assembly.

The US President must sign the law

US President Joe Biden had previously confirmed that he would introduce legislation that would ban TikTok or force it to sell. Presidential sanction is the next step in the process. Previously, only a bill on the subject had been put forward in the debates, but its relevance to the existing law had been lost.

The ban on the Chinese platform occurred in the country almost a few years ago during the Donald Trump administration. But Biden himself reversed the gridlock at the beginning of his administration.

A year later, the platform was banned from using official cell phones in Congress, showing that the issue was still far from over. Currently, the social network has approximately 170 million users in the United States, one of ByteDance’s largest international markets.

In addition to asking the community for help in avoiding punishment, TikTok also denies accusations of espionage and surveillance. The company promises to appeal the decision and may even take legal action to reverse it.
