Botulinum toxin preparations are widely used in cosmetology. They are injected into patients’ faces to smooth facial wrinkles. One of the most famous products is sold under the brand name Botox. It is produced by Allergan (owned by the American Abbvie), which two years ago stopped supplying this medication to Russia.
This niche was quickly filled by other suppliers, including Russian companies Nacimbio and Innopharm, notes Nikolay Bespalov, development director at RNC Pharma. In total, local players managed to increase their share in the segment from 25 to 46% in packages over the course of a year, he said.
Recently, botulinum therapy has been used for diseases of the nervous system, experts say. Botulinum toxin reduces muscle spasms and hypertonicity, drugs with this substance have begun to be used more frequently for spasticity (a state of increased muscle tone in multiple sclerosis or the consequences of a stroke), said Karina Galiullina , neurologist in the Bestdoctor group of companies.
These drugs are now widely used also for the treatment of cerebral palsy, migraines, etc., added Svetlana Kukushkina, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist and director of the Medsi dermatovenereology and cosmetology center in Krasnaya Presnya.
