Horizon OS*, previously exclusive to Quest*’s own headsets, offers features such as gesture recognition and spatial awareness. Now partner companies like Asus and Lenovo can use this platform to create custom VR/MR devices designed for specific purposes.
This strategy reflects Google’s approach to Android in the mobile market. By making the core platform open, Meta* hopes to create a diverse ecosystem of VR devices, similar to the multitude of Android phones. This could accelerate the spread of VR/MR beyond current gaming and enterprise application areas.
While VR/MR glasses have yet to achieve mainstream success, Meta*’s decision to open up their platform shows their belief in the future of the technology.
