According to Shelley Jung, manager of the Fitch Ratings analytics company, Samsung does not have an advantage over SK Hynix in the short term. And Samsung needs time to catch up with its rival.
Meanwhile, Samsung appears to be planning a collaboration with Nvidia, as HBM3e’s main customer is not named, but “product commercialization is proceeding smoothly in accordance with the customer’s plan.” This was announced by Kim Jae-jung, Samsung’s vice president of memory chips production. Nvidia also said in April that it was testing samples of Samsung’s HBM.
Deliveries of Samsung products may begin at the end of the second quarter, that is, in June. But SK Hynix, the world’s largest memory chip maker, announced strong first-quarter results. The Device Solutions (DS) division reported an operating profit of 1.9 trillion won ($1.4 billion) in the first three months of this year, compared to an operating loss of 4.6 trillion won in 2023.
