Previously, iOS, App Store and Safari were already included in the DMA (Digital Markets Act) list. The new rules oblige major IT companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon to ensure the interaction of their services with competitors and limit the exchange of data between their own products.
According to the commission, iPadOS limits users’ preferences and prevents them from switching to other tablet operating systems. Apple believes DMA compromises the security of user data.
The company must comply with DMA requirements within six months. European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said that the decision aims to ensure fair competition. Apple said it was willing to cooperate with the commission but was concerned about the security risks posed by the DMA, according to the company.
Additionally, the European Commission is separately investigating the App Store’s policies and checking whether the Apple store allows developers to offer free alternative payment options to users outside its ecosystem.
