Experts from the Federal Research Center of Biotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences analyzed microorganisms in wastewater and activated sludge from Moscow wastewater treatment plants. They discovered hundreds of genes that make these microorganisms resistant to antibiotics. This is because antibiotics are widely used in medicine and agriculture. Bacteria can change resistance genes, making drugs less effective and increasing the cost of treatment.

Water passing through treatment plants remains contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Even after cleaning, the concentration of such bacteria remains high. Researchers found that the rate of resistant microorganisms in treated water discharged into the Moscow River decreased, although not as much as expected.

Scientists concluded that the problem of antibiotic resistance in Moscow waters is serious and requires further research. This could result in antibiotic-resistant bacteria returning to humans through water supplies.
