According to the transport and logistics portal Infotrans, in parallel with the increase in prices for freight transport by rail, the prices of sea freight from China have also increased.
Here the increase in rates ranged between $800 and $1,000 and between $1,300 and $1,500. Prices depend on the port of departure. Infotrans also points to increased demand for transport: there are almost no empty seats on ships, shipping companies offer positions for the end of May or beginning of June.
In early May, Russian Railways announced the resumption of rail transport from China to the European Union in transit through the Russian Federation. Thus, according to the company, in the first quarter transportation increased to 90 thousand TEU (conventional unit of measurement for the capacity of cargo vehicles), which represents an increase of 44%.
The company’s deputy general director Alexey Shilo highlighted the change in the transport structure along the transit corridor. According to him, in 2024 a growth trend in traffic between Belarus and China has been established.
“It also increased by 68% compared to the same period last year; we transported a total of about 135 thousand TEUs,” Shilo told Kommersant at the beginning of the month.
