Last year’s surprise release, Hi-Fi Rush, took the gaming world by storm. Featuring music from legendary bands, this rhythm action game has won numerous awards and reached over 3 million players in just four months. Microsoft boasted about the game’s success, calling it a “breakout hit”.

But here’s the problem: The day after the studio’s closure, Xbox Game Studios president Matt Booty emphasized at a company meeting that the company was committed to “small games that bring us prestige and rewards.” This announcement confused many employees, considering that Tango Gameworks fits this description perfectly with Hi-Fi Rush.

Even more surprising was Microsoft’s commitment to developments in Japan. Xbox head Phil Spencer has previously spoken about the importance of encouraging creative freedom and bringing Japanese-exclusive games to the platform. He even hinted that there would be more AAA games in Japan, similar to past Xbox 360 exclusives like Lost Odyssey. However, it is unclear whether these plans will continue following the closure of Tango Gameworks (a Japanese studio).
