The purpose of this acquisition remains unclear. Tesla had no comment and Luminar cited confidentiality. However, it is estimated that these sensors can be used to test and develop Tesla’s robotaxi program.
The move contradicts past statements by Musk, who has called Lidar a “crutch” for autonomous cars. Some think Tesla may hedge its bets or test its camera-based system with lidar data. If rumors are to be believed, since the robotaxi launch is very soon, Tesla’s attention is on whether these lidar sensors will appear in its vehicles.
