On June 28, the Moscow City International Court ruled to impose a fine on the Twitch streaming service in the amount of 2 million Russian rubles. The reason for this decision was the ignorance of Russian legislation, that is, the refusal to locate the data of Russian users directly on the territory of the Russian Federation.
According to the letter of the law, any service operating on the territory of the Russian Federation must have a local representative office and servers on which the data of its users are stored. Otherwise, they can be fined from 1 to 6 million rubles.
For now, it remains to be seen whether Twitch will immediately pay the fine or try to contest the verdict. For the latter, the representatives of the site have 10 days until the court decision officially enters into force. The site’s intentions regarding the localization of user data in the future are also unclear.
